The Drugge-family is a Belgian Walloon family of hammersmiths, whose sons became smiths and daughters got married with smiths. Several Walloon families came in the beginning of the 17th century into Sweden at the service of the arms manufacturing for the 30 Year's War 1618-1648, and from where their descendants were recruited also into the Finnish ironworks. So came also the Drugges to Teijo (Tyko) around 1720 after the Greater Wrath and later also to Björkboda. Teijo (fi, sv) ironworks was grounded already 1686 but Björkboda (fi, sv) not until 1732.

This surname has at different times and sources been written in many different ways: Droghe, Droguet, Drouguet, Drougée, Drougge, Drygge, Drugge, Drugg, Trugg. The name Trygg, Trygge = safe, secure, has proved to be a given/taken soldier name and doesn't belong to this family. Typical Druggean first names were Johan (< Jean), Isaac, Anders, Fredric, Fredrica, Anna (< Annika), Hedwig, Lovisa (< Louis) and Caisa (< Cathrine, Catharina).

In the Name Service of the Finnish Population Register Center the name Drugg among the living Finnish persons in Finland and abroad was 22.2.2012 found as a present name altogether 30 times and the name Drugge altogether 37 times.

The word Walloon comes from a reconstructed Proto-Germanic word *walhaz (*walh-s, *walahaz, page 53), which means foreigner, stranger, speaker of Roman or Celtic languages. From the same source come, among others, also the place names Wales and Cornwall and English walnut.

The capital letters and the Roman numbers on this page point only to the ancestors of this Maria Emelia Drugg who was married to my grandmother's brother Arwid Juselius, and cannot be connected with the numbering of the main page. Her husband and children are mentioned on the main page under the title Drugg in Finnish only.

There are still two other Walloon families on these pages but only in Finnish. One of them is the Finnish branch of the bourgeoise Martin-family originating from Liège area and later from Gävle, Sweden on the page Brungström, Martin.

The other one is the Tollet-family, originally smiths and also from Liège area. At least two of them moved into Finland having more influence on military and farming than on hammering. Two of them and their descendants can be found on the page Käkisalmen ja Vihdin seudun Printzejä, ie. The Printzes around the Käkisalmi and Vihti areas, under the title Tollet.

Links on this page show mostly pages of digitized old communion books and burial, marriage and birth records in Swedish, as well as on this page causes of death, occupation terms and some notes from the communion books or other short quotations too. Other genealogically significant links (fi, en, se, de) and literary sources (fi, en) are at the end of the main page.

The Finnish Genealogical Society had in February 2019 removed a part of its digitized original church book sources from public use, after which they opened only if you were a registered member of the Society. On this page the sources of Turku, Dragsfjärd, Wästanfjärd and Kemiö have 24.3.2019 been replaced by the corresponding data of the National Archives of Finland.

France was 1589-1792 ruled by the Bourbon-family, whose kings called Louis started the use of the names Lovis and Lovisa.

Originally those names are derived from Old German Chlodoweg (= praised fighter). The first one mentioned in the history was Klodowig I (Clovis I) (466 - 27.11.511), who started the Merovingian dynasty by uniting the Frankish tribes and made Paris the capital of France.

In Old High German the name was Ludwig, which changed in Old Low German into diminutive Lüdeke and in Finland in the Middle Ages into Lyytikkä.

An Unknown Drugg

Drugg vs. Trogen

Gossen Gustaf Israël Trogen, born 16.7.1804, moved from Pirkkala 6.11.1822 and arrived in Turku 10.12.1822, "Läser nöjaktigt, ärlig, ledig, hinderlös".

According to the Pirkkala migration certificate he was also born there, but no birth record has been found. Into Pirkkala Wiks Gård he had moved according to the communion book earlier the same year 1822 from Tampere after having spent there a few months.

In Turku the name is regularly Drugg, in Pirkkala Trogen or Israëlsson. The name Trogen = loyal is a typical soldier name and the form Drugg may well be a later clerical error or an intentional change.

On the other hand the name Drugg is more rare in Pirkkala than in Turku area, so the name Trogen could as well be a clerical error.
